Do I need a mold test before cleanup?

Not always. The EPA says that in most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. The job is to clean the mold and fix the moisture problem. A test can help when you cannot see the mold but the smell keeps coming back.

A test names what is on a swab or in the air. It does not dry the wall. The EPA treats those as two different jobs.

When the EPA says you already know enough

The EPA sampling page says that in most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. The EPA mold guide says to clean up the mold and fix the water problem. The cleanup page is the one with the 10 square foot line for work you can do yourself.

That is why a company that wants a test before it will even look at a visible patch should explain what the sample will change.

When a sample still helps

A test can help when you cannot see the growth and the smell keeps coming back, or when an insurer asks for one. Ask what the fee includes: a surface sample, an air sample, or a written report. Spores in house dust are already there. The sample only names what was on that swab or in that air.

In Texas, the person who inspects and the person who remediates are often different licensed roles. How to choose a mold inspection or cleanup company is the checklist for that split.

What that means after a storm

In Tuscaloosa, a wet basement after a storm may need moisture readings more than a named species. What to do when you find mold in the house is the order: stop the water, dry what you can, then decide whether a sample changes the next step.
