Questions
Short answers about growth time, insurance, small cleanups, and tests, each linked to the agency page it came from.
- Can I clean a small mold patch myself? The EPA says a moldy area under about 10 square feet is work many people can clean themselves once the leak is fixed. Larger or contaminated jobs need a crew.
- Do I need a mold test before cleanup? The EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary when mold growth is visible. A test can help when you cannot see the mold.
- Does homeowners insurance cover mold? Most home policies cover mold only after a sudden covered leak, such as a burst pipe. Gradual leaks and flood mold are usually left out. Your insurer decides.
- How soon does mold grow after a water leak? The EPA says wet materials dried in 24 to 48 hours usually do not grow mold. The CDC says to assume mold if a flooded house stayed wet longer.
