Does homeowners insurance cover mold?
Usually only when the mold follows a sudden covered water event, such as a burst pipe. The Texas Department of Insurance says most home policies cover sudden accidental water, and mold on a damaged item from that event, but not gradual leaks or flood mold. Your policy and your insurer decide the claim.

A burst pipe and a slow drip behind a tub are two different insurance questions. People mix them up because both can leave a musty wall.
Sudden water is the usual indoor claim
The Texas Department of Insurance says most homeowner and renters policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe, a toilet overflow, or a broken washer hose. If mold develops on a damaged item from that event, TDI says it would be covered. Most policies do not cover gradual leaks or seepage, and that includes mold from those leaks.
The Insurance Information Institute's Am I Covered? page says an HO-3 covers accidental discharge from a plumbing system. Your deductible still applies. The insurer decides the claim.
Flood mold is a different product
TDI says mold from a flood would not be covered because home policies do not cover floods. You would need a separate flood policy. A FEMA flood insurance appeal decision says the Standard Flood Insurance Policy excludes mold that was within the policyholder's control, including a failure to inspect and maintain the house after the flood recedes. It says mold may be covered when a civil authority kept you out of the house or the flooding made it unreachable.
If outdoor water came in, ask your flood agent what that policy actually pays. Do not take a cleanup crew's word for it.
What that means in Beaumont and elsewhere
In Beaumont, Texas licensing and TDI's mold page are both local facts you can use on the call. The same split, sudden indoor water versus outdoor flood water, still applies in other cities. What to do when you find mold in the house is the order while you wait for the adjuster.
